Exploring Robert Gordon University's Graduate Apprenticeships: Your Questions Answered

In the ever-evolving landscape of education and professional development, Robert Gordon University (RGU) stands as a beacon of innovation. With its Graduate Apprenticeship programme now in its seventh year, RGU continues to redefine the boundaries of learning, offering a unique blend of academic excellence and real-world experience. As we delve into the intricacies of RGU's Graduate Apprenticeships, let's explore the questions and answers that explain the path to success in today's dynamic workforce.

What sets RGU's Graduate Apprenticeships apart from traditional education routes?

RGU's Graduate Apprenticeships offer a unique blend of academic learning and on-the-job experience. Unlike traditional education routes, participants can earn a degree while working full-time, gaining valuable industry experience and a salary simultaneously.

What are the entry requirements for RGU's Graduate Apprenticeships?

To apply for a Graduate Apprenticeship at RGU, you need to be of school leaving age or older, a Scottish resident, and employed in Scotland with an employer supportive of your application. Additionally, you should not already hold a degree in an equivalent subject, except for our Masters level course Cyber Security where you ideally hold a degree with relevant computing based content.

How do RGU's Graduate Apprenticeships work?

RGU's Graduate Apprenticeships allow participants to spend most of their time in their day-to-day role at work while dedicating some time to studying with RGU which we recommend being around a 80-20 work to study time split. This flexible structure enables individuals to balance their professional responsibilities with academic pursuits seamlessly.

What is the financial commitment for participants and their employers?

There is no financial cost to participants or their employers for RGU's Graduate Apprenticeships. Participants can apply for funding through the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) each year, while employers are asked to provide staff/student time for course commitments.

What digital-based courses are available at RGU?

In 2024, RGU will offer a BSc (Hons) in Data Science and an MSc in Cyber Security. These courses, along with Graduate Apprenticeships in Business Management, Engineering, Accounting, and Construction, cater to diverse career paths and industry demands.

Are RGU's Graduate Apprenticeships only for school leavers?

No, RGU's Graduate Apprenticeships are open to individuals of school leaving age or older. Whether you're entering the workforce for the first time or seeking to upskill, RGU's apprenticeships provide opportunities for professional development at any stage of your career.

Can businesses of all sizes benefit from RGU's Graduate Apprenticeships?

Yes, RGU's Graduate Apprenticeships are designed to benefit businesses of all sizes. Whether you're a small enterprise looking to onboard new talent or a larger organisation aiming to upskill existing staff, RGU's apprenticeships offer a cost-effective solution to address the skills gap.

How often do participants need to attend campus?

RGU's delivery model minimises the need for frequent campus attendance. The majority of learning is conducted online, with approximately 4-5 on-campus days built into the course each year. This approach prioritises workplace learning and minimises logistical challenges for participants.

Is there support available for participants throughout the apprenticeship?

Yes, RGU provides robust support for Graduate Apprenticeship participants. With a proven track record and a dedicated support framework, RGU ensures that participants have the guidance and resources needed to succeed in both their studies and their professional roles.

Testimonial from Kelsey Crehan

“The BSc ( Hons ) Data Science Graduate Apprenticeship at RGU has been an incredibly enriching experience, providing me with the opportunity to develop skills that I likely would not have had the space to cultivate solely within the confines of the workplace. Over the course my first 3 years, I have been fortunate to be involved in a myriad of projects that were previously beyond my reach, and I look forward to continuing this trend!

In light of recent advancements in Machine Learning and AI, the significance of programming and data science skills has never been more apparent. The Data Science GA course not only equips students with the technical skills required to navigate this evolving landscape but also instils a deeper understanding of the underlying principles behind these technologies. In other words, I believe the course can serve as a gateway for those looking to break into this field and acquire the hard skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly data-driven world – skills I am sure I will utilise for many years to come. “
