Leonardo – Industrial Placements – Edinburgh – 6 months

MEng – Electronic Engineer

Job Description:

Do you want a paid work placement (£25,000, with holidays), working on real-time projects alongside leading scientists and engineers, within a globally renowned company, based in either Edinburgh or Newcastle for six months? Students currently in the final or penultimate year of a degree in Electronic Engineering (MEng) have the opportunity to experience a six-month paid MEng / industrial placement working as an Electronics/Hardware Engineer within Leonardo. The programme will develop the knowledge and skills you require to become an engineering or business professional of the future.

You will be given the opportunity to undertake an individual project in support of your academic course of study, in an area of electronics design relevant to radar or electro-optic products. You will be introduced to the hardware development processes and utilise state-of-the-art methods, technology and tools. You will report to an experienced engineer who will provide day to day guidance and on-the-job training.

You will gain experience on aspects of the development lifecycle through your individual project. This could include requirements analysis, design, implementation, integration, applied research and test. You will be given the opportunity to learn about the Leonardo products via your project. The MEng project will be based around solving real-life engineering problems on state-of-the-art avionics sensor systems.

Particular emphasis will be placed on learning practical skills that may not be easily gained or experienced in the academic environment of university. You will demonstrate an interest and knowledge in one or more of the disciplines within Electronics Hardware Engineering (e.g. RF, Microwave Power supply, EMC, FPGA and high-speed digital). If you successfully complete your placement, and meet the required standard, you may be given the opportunity to be "fast tracked" to a Graduate position at Leonardo.

What you’ll do as an MEng / Industrial Summer Placement

  • Learn the skills required for hardware development. This could include developing practical skills in design techniques for aerospace applications, understanding of key technologies, developing experience using ECAD tools and test equipment.

  • Electronics Engineers design, document, build and test electronics circuits and firmware designs to go into our various systems. You will interface with customers and suppliers on many factors within the design and liaise closely with engineers from several other disciplines, which may include Mechanical, Software, Systems, Supportability and Design Integrity.

  • There will be opportunities to develop expertise in the design of circuits, FPGAs and subsystems at various stages in the product lifecycle. This will include requirements capture, performance analysis, design, code, verification, validation and support to integration and qualification.

  • Deliver technical reports and presentations on you work assignments to your supervisor and fellow MEng students.

  • Deliver plans and reports to the required academic standard of your university.

Most training will be delivered on the job, working on real hardware within projects groups delivering sensor systems to our customers.

Additional formal technical training to support on the job training may be provided via taught courses depending on the business needs.

What we need from you:

You should be matriculated in an MEng course in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline. We normally only consider candidates who require a 6-month industrial placement to meet the academic requirement of their course. A full statement of courses and projects studied at university and corresponding grades/marks/percentage should be included in your CV. Studying an electronics-biased degree, including modules covering topics such as digital design, analogue design and signal processing with experience of using PCB design and simulation tools, is highly desirable.
