Summer 2015 Full time, three month placement based near Essex. Project: Interactive reporting of genomic information
Title: Interactive reporting of genomic information
Supervisor: Jennifer Becq
This internship will allow a student in Computer Science or Software Engineering to develop his/her strong front-end developing skills to create interactive reports aimed at presenting biological data for future medical applications.
DNA sequencing will soon be routinely used for cancer diagnostics and other genetic diseases [1]. However, sequencing is producing extremely large datasets that need to be analysed and compared in order to extract medical information. Most importantly visualisation of the results is critical for accurate and quick interpretation. Because of the multi-layered nature of the information and the end-users, it is crucial that the results are presented in a way that is easy-to-use and easy-to-understand.
The aim of the internship is to complement our analysis workflow by allowing the display and interactive exploration of the statistical data generated. The project involves developing a multiplatform web interface that interacts to a MySQL database, allowing different displays of the data according to the user and selected options. A main focus will be to develop interactive graphics using Data-Driven Documents JavaScript library (d3.js) [3], allowing the student to learn that library.
This project would suit a student with strong web programming skills, and a passion for great design and usability. While knowledge of d3.js is not required, strong javascript and Python database and REST API coding is recommended. Moreover, the student should have an interest in learning about the future of biomedicine and its intersection with information technology.
