2019 Test Intern - Sumdog Spelling Project
Start date: ASAP
Duration: 7-8 weeks
Hours: 10 hours per week
Sumdog is an online games-based maths learning service used by tens of thousands of schools and millions of children worldwide. We are world leaders when it comes to engagement and one of a handful of companies that are revolutionising education by tailoring questions to student ability. Our students are working hard at mastering questions that are appropriate to their level. The results are spectacular. Recent research shows primary school students that use our product regularly, progress three times faster than those that don't.
Sumdog has a big heart. We are also a small but rapidly growing company that has just received a substantial investment. Despite our small size, our large customer base and the complexity of our product, from the algorithms that adapt to individual students through to the big data we collect for teacher reports, means that we face similar challenges to the internet giants. For many people, this makes us the perfect employer. We're on an exciting trajectory but we're still small enough to listen to our employees, big enough to be technically interesting and the work we do is both rewarding and valuable.
We're looking for a passionate student or graduate to join our tester team for our specific Spelling project, and help shape the future of education.
What you'll be doing
This is a fixed term role specifically for the Spelling Project. We estimate you will be working with us for 7-8 weeks.
You will be working specifically on the Sumdog Spelling Project, working to listen for audio defects on audio files for the Sumdog Spelling game. We are expanding our Spelling game by adding over 1000 words and sentences which will assist primary school children with their spelling. To localise our product, we have native English, Scottish and US English speakers reading all of the words and sentences. Depending on their location, the pupils hear the word in a sentence in the accent local to their location and must type the correct spelling. Your work will be centred around ensuring that these sound recordings are appropriate to use on the Sumdog website.
The work can sometimes be monotonous and you must be happy maintaining attention to detail throughout the process.
Essential background and experience
Some basic knowledge of Audacity functions (or similar software) and confidence in editing/exporting audio files. Good listening skills - able to identify audio defects and recognise correct pronunciation of words and sentences in an English, Scottish and American accent. A good knowledge of Google sheets and managing information within them. Studying towards or have gained an undergraduate degree. Strong computer skills.
You must be available for two half days per week over a 7-8 week period - between Monday and Friday. We estimate that you will be working no more than 10 hours per week.
A creative and inquisitive thinker with exceptional attention to detail. A great communicator who is both good at listening and at expressing complex ideas. A focused individual with an attitude to deliver the task at hand in a timely manner. A passionate individual who believes in our mission and has the drive, flexibility and determination to succeed as part of a dynamic team.
